“We long for our children’s history to be different”
Juan’s parents never had the opportunity to study. But they have big dreams for Juan – both spiritual and academic.
Above all, they want him to grow in his faith and to love others. They also want him to grow in his studies and to have the opportunity to go to university.
Juan is 5.
It’s a long road from kindergarten to university, but Juan is on his way. There is a Vida School near his village, where he attends class every morning. When Juan graduates from Grade 7, there’s a Vida Junior High for him to go to or he can attend the Vida Weekend Extension Program. These options will provide him with a high school education. Juan has opportunities to learn.
For too many Guatemalan children – especially those living in remote communities – the parents’ history is repeating itself. There are few accessible schools. There are few opportunities to study. There are few opportunities to know God.

Juan is so excited to go to school. He’s learning to speak Spanish for the first time, in addition to the Poqomchí he speaks at home. He’s learning to sing praises during the morning devotions. He loves to draw pictures. He loves to learn. His parents can already envision a brighter future for little Juan.

The Department of Education has asked Impact to reach into even more remote areas where there are few elementary schools and no junior high or high schools. We’ve identified several villages that are in desperate need of educational opportunities – and of the Word of God. We’re just starting the process of building trust with leaders and with the communities themselves, and seeing where God will lead. It’s a long road to a brighter future, but these are the first steps.
