This year, as we celebrate sponsorship throughout the month of May, we want to make sure we’re also celebrating all our class sponsors. Class sponsors come alongside a whole class of students and provide essential resources for the class like school supplies and educational materials – even teachers’ salaries!
One of the neatest things about sponsoring a class is that you become part of a cluster of sponsors, surrounding your class with love and support. That means you can choose to sponsor the same class together with friends and family and share the connection and the excitement!
That’s what Julie and her family did together. A few years ago, she and her husband decided to sponsor a class: “We picked a class from the school our sponsor child attends,” she explains. Then she invited their adult children to join them.
Her son, Tyrel, remembers: “My mom suggested the idea. After looking into it a little bit, I really liked the concept and immediately signed up for the class sponsorship. The idea that we could work together on this made sense, and I joined without hesitation.”
So did Tyrel’s brother and sister. And the next time Julie travelled to Guatemala, she was able to be the “family representative” and bring a family photo to their class – and then take lots of pictures of the class visit back to her kids. This year, Tyrel was able to meet the class in person too, alongside his dad.
“We appreciate that we sponsor this class as a family,” Julie says. “It feels like they’re part of our family group, and it’s something special that we can share. We all connect with the class in different ways and at different times, and I hope that we are an encouragement to them.”
Tyrel agrees. “This provides a relatively simple source of ministry that we can all engage in together. It opens up a different set of opportunities as opposed to traditional, individual sponsorships.”
As Julie, Tyrel and their family continue to pray for their class and their teacher, they invite you to consider forming your own sponsorship cluster.
